12/12/12 Mural Blessing Ceremony and Flor y Canto

On 12/12/12 Casa Coyo held a blessing ceremony- Honoring La Virgen and Coyolxauhqui and Bendita Mujer Mural by Lili Flor. Danza Azteca Tlaltlacah blessed the mural. Poets Gloria Alvarez, Abel Salas, Juanita Chavez and Cui Cui participated in Flor y Canto open mic.  Food and drink provided free to the community.


2011 Day of the Dead Celebration

Mictlan Without Borders/ Mictlan Sin Fronteras

On November 20th, 2011 Casa Coyo celebrated "Mictlan Without Borders" with an altar, Danza Azteca Tlaltlacah and open mic with Maria Guardado, Adriana Alvarez and Abel Salas. 

“Mictlan Without Borders” is a Day of the Dead/ Dia de los Muertos celebration and altar installation honoring migrants who have died crossing a border. Each year, thousands of women, men and children risk their lives seeking a better future or flee their homelands due to political or religious persecution. “Mictlan Without Borders" honors migrants who have died on their journeys and welcomes them to Mictlan, the Aztec underworld of the dead, to celebrate their lives.

Casa Coyo Film Grant

$1,000 Business Development Grant to filmmakers creating films that challenge social norms around issues of race, indigenous identity, class, gender and/or sexuality.

Recipient will receive funds and consultation services to help market their film to investors.  Funds to be used for marketing/media kits, business cards, professional reel copies.  Recipient will also receive two hour business consultations with Ms. Chavez ($500 value).

All of these plants are California natives

  • The Coral Bell has been in bloom since January. 
  • The Climbing Milkweed is the only plant where Queen Butterflies breed. It started blooming last week.

Green Renovations

Current Project: Gray Water Cans?

Creating a gray water system can be time consuming and costly. I was thinking of providing water cans for residents to reuse water which they would otherwise throw away. I have a water bucket and instead of throwing away water which is clean (like changing Kitty's water bowl), I dump the water in the bucket and later use it to water plants... Cynthia could use hers to water her vegetable garden (pictured).
