Day of the Dead/Día de los Muertos is an indigenous tradition dating more than 3,000 years in Mesoamerica. Due to the conquest and systematic destruction of the codices and other sacred writings, scarce accounts exist to document this ceremony. Casa Coyo recognizes that to practice this sacred ceremony in the face of forced colonization has been an act of resistance. The Queering Mictlan exhibition boldly continues this tradition of resistance by honoring our ancestors via the voices of queer artists.
In these times of war, destruction and fear, Queering Mictlan is the reclaiming of Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead as one which recognizes the queer voice as a source of insight and inspiration. From the queer who historically has been raped, tortured, burned at the stake and denied equal rights, we now have a call to heal mother earth and each other; to honor nuestra madre tierra, to treat each other with love, respect and understanding. Queering Mictlan is a rebirth, the harvesting of a just path. It is here in Aztlan, the womb of our ancestral home, that we begin this journey.
